Images of Zakynthos

Following our time on the island, this gallery puts our images of Zakynthos (Zante in Italian),  together in one place.

Zakynthos is the most southerly of the Ionian islands in Greece. It is well known as a busy tourist destination with lively nightlife. Music plays a big part in the islands culture which might have somehting to do with the popular nightlife. We were curious to see if it had enough to offer beyond this reputation.

Zakynthos Town

The harbour city of Zakynthos is the capital and the busiest place on the island. We were aware the island was extensively damaged by a major earthquake in 1953 but were unsure how this affected the character of the island. Thankfully, some historical buildings remain and the town is still well worth a visit.

Because the island sits west of the Greek mainland it has a higher level of rainfall (as do all the Ionian islands) and it is greener than expected. Farmers make the most of this and there are many crops of olives and grapes. Beyond Zakynthos town there are plenty of impressive beaches, turtle nesting sites in the south, the Blue Caves in the north and the famous Navagio beach (shipwrech beach). Away from the coasts it is typically more rural and unspoilt. So if you want it, there is enough beyond the nitghtlife.

Zakynthos Gallery

Our gallery aims to capture the essence of the island, island life and landscapes we encountered. Hopefully you’ll enjoy looking through the photos as much we did taking them. If you are looking for a photo of somewhere in particular that isn’t there let us know and we can check for you.
